When they behead your brother … love your neighbor

We have grown tragically accustomed to hearing of Islamist atrocities overseas, such as the Feb. 11 beheading of a Christian pastor during an attack on his church in Tanzania. We are aware the deplorable tradition of “honor killing” murder has made its way to North American shores.

Truly shocking to many Westerners, however, will be the news that Sharia-style beheading also has arrived in America. A 27-year-old man, Yusuf Ibrahim, was arrested Feb. 10 in New Jersey for shooting and decapitating two Egyptian Christian men and burying the body parts in separate graves.

Self-righteous, self-serving Islamists are an insult to earnest Muslims everywhere. There is no justice in hateful atrocities — regardless of who perpetrates them — and the God of Abraham will judge those who commit evil in his name. The Scripture wisely reminds us: “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”

In the face of persecution and oppression, we admire the heart of Barnabas Mtokambali, the Tanzania general superintendent for the Assemblies of God, who encouraged Christians in Tanzania to remain Christlike in their faith, in spite of the murder of their pastor.

“Our response as a church is not one of violence and hatred, reflecting the attitude of those committing such crimes,” Mtokambali said, “but that of Christ and reflecting his image by loving and praying for those who humiliate and persecute us, and not holding such sins against them.”

Islamist rage is spreading like a deadly plague, under cover provided by naive souls who insist all Islam is the “religion of peace” and that Islamists can be placated by redressing their grievances. The only satisfaction Muslim extremists will acknowledge is total surrender or death.

Civilized souls, men and women who love freedom and justice must respond to this monster wherever it raises one of its heads. While governments must use force to combat militant evil, Christians must set an entirely different example. We must multiply justice, rather than hatred, with an intentional mission of building relationships in all segments of our communities and loving our neighbors the way we love ourselves.

When broken men, blinded by rage and hatred, dishonor the name of the One who is Holy, Just, and True, followers of Jesus must respond in the spirit of Christ. We must not only love our neighbors, we also must love those who make themselves our enemies and those who persecute us.

Islamist crimes against humanity in Mali

CC Washington Post NCSudarsan Raghavan reports for the Washington Post on Islamist crimes against humanity in northern Mali:

SEGOU, Mali — On a sweltering afternoon, Islamist police officers dragged Fatima Al Hassan out of her house in the fabled city of Timbuktu. They beat her up, shoved her into a white pickup truck and drove her to their headquarters. She was locked up in a jail as she awaited her sentence: 100 lashes with an electrical cord.

“Why are you doing this?” she recalled asking.

Hassan was being punished for giving water to a male visitor.

The Islamist radicals who seized a vast arc of territory in northern Mali in the spring are intensifying their brutality against the population, according to victims, human rights groups, and U.N. and Malian officials. The attacks are being perpetrated as the United States, European countries and regional powers are readying an African force to retake northern Mali, after months of hesitation. …

Refugees fleeing the north are now bringing stories that are darker than those recounted in interviews from this summer. Although their experiences cannot be independently verified — because the Islamists have threatened to kill or kidnap Westerners who visit — U.N. officials and human rights activists say that they have heard similar reports of horrific abuses and that some may amount to war crimes.

The refugees say the Islamists are raping and forcibly marrying women, and recruiting children for armed conflict. Social interaction deemed an affront to their interpretation of Islam is zealously punished through Islamic courts and a police force that has become more systematic and inflexible, human rights activists and local officials say. …

Radical Islamists have transformed vast stretches of desert in the north into an enclave for al-Qaeda militants and other jihadists. They have imposed a hard-edged brand of sharia law, echoing Afghanistan’s Taliban movement, in this West African country where moderate Islam has thrived for centuries.

People are deprived of basic freedoms, historic tombs have been destroyed, and any cultural practices deemed un-Islamic are banned. Children are denied education. The sick and elderly die because many doctors and nurses have fled, and most clinics and hospitals have been destroyed or looted. …

The Islamists .. have encouraged their fighters to marry women and girls, some as young as 10, and often at gunpoint. After sex, they initiate a quick divorce. In an extreme case that has shocked the country, a girl in Timbuktu was forced last month to “marry” six fighters in one night, according to a report in one of Mali’s biggest newspapers.

“They are abusing religion to force women and girls to have intercourse,” said Ibrahima Berte, an official at Mali’s National Commission for Human Rights. “This kind of forced marriage is really just sexual abuse.”

In a telephone interview, a senior Islamist commander conceded that his fighters were marrying young girls.

“Our religion says that if a girl is 12, she must get married to avoid losing her virginity in a wrong way,” said Oumar Ould Hamaha, the military leader of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, one of the three radical groups ruling the north. …

Boys, too, are being abused. With a possible war looming, some as young as 10 have been taken to training camps, where they learn to use weapons and plant homemade bombs, U.N. officials and human rights activists say. And as the economy worsens in rebel areas, some parents have “sold” their children as it becomes harder to buy food and to curry favor with the Islamists.

“They give $10 to impoverished parents to recruit their children in the name of defending Islam,” said Gaoussou Traore, the secretary general of Comade, a Malian children’s rights group. “The Islamists tell parents that their children will go to paradise, that they will benefit in the next world.” …

Muslim schoolgirls abducted, beheaded by Christians

Outraged by that headline? You haven’t seen those news reports because Christians aren’t taught to commit atrocities like that. Have you ever wondered why you don’t see headlines about the atrocities actually committed against Christians every day?

Rupert Shortt writes at

Imagine the unspeakable fury that would erupt across the Islamic world if a Christian-led government in Khartoum had been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese Muslims over the past 30 years. Or if Christian gunmen were firebombing mosques in Iraq during Friday prayers. Or if Muslim girls in Indonesia had been abducted and beheaded on their way to school, because of their faith.

Such horrors are barely thinkable, of course. But they have all occurred in reverse, with Christians falling victim to Islamist aggression. Only two days ago, a suicide bomber crashed a jeep laden with explosives into a packed Catholic church in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 100.

… Why is such a huge scourge chronically under-reported in the West? … Take the fallout of last month’s protests around the world against the American film about the Prophet Mohammed. While most of the debate centred on the rule of law and the limits of free speech, almost nothing was said about how much more routinely Islamists insult Christians, almost always getting away with their provocations scot-free.

Innocence of Muslims, the production that spurred all the outrage, has been rightly dismissed as contemptible trash. What, though, of a website such as “Guardians of the Faith”, run by Salafist extremists in Cairo? Among many posts, it has carried an article entitled “Why Muslims are superior to Copts”. “Being a Muslim girl whose role models are the wives of the Prophet, who were required to wear the hijab, is better than being a Christian girl, whose role models are whores,” it declares. “Being a Muslim who fights to defend his honour and his faith is better than being a Christian who steals, rapes, and kills children.”

Hateful messages breed hateful acts. Is it any surprise that mobs have set fire to one church after another across Egypt in recent years?
