LIFE AND DEATH–Wafiq* is the youngest member of his family, but when he witnessed his big brother shot in the head and his mother screaming for help as his family attempted to flee into Jordan, the 4-year-old did something remarkable. He raised his arm and appealed to an approaching soldier: “I beg you, Uncle, don’t hurt us. Have mercy on us.” His request, and his mother’s cries, must have worked: Soldiers took his brother to a hospital. Later the whole family made it across the border into Jordan.
