Kutty’s story only begins with freedom

Saju Mathew of International Justice Mission writes:

The first time I saw Kutty, he was shaking with fear.

His face was haggard, and his eyes showed the toll years of forced labor had taken on him. Kutty was the first slave I ever met. After more than three years of bondage, Kutty’s owner didn’t even need barbed wire or high walls to entrap him. Kutty was that scared. “I have four kids in the rice mill working… Even if we are sick, we have to work. We cannot go to our home village for any occasion, or the owner will come after us,” he explained. Intimidated by the owner’s threats, Kutty shared with IJM the simple, terrible truth that had come to define his life: “I am really scared of him.”

Because of support like yours, my team and the local government rescued Kutty and his family from slavery in 2008. His family’s life changed forever: His kids went back to school, he and his wife secured good jobs in freedom.
